When a movie is released onto DVD/Blu-ray, a person usually hears about it from a friend or sees the marketing on television. Division III: Football’s Finest, heard of it? Well, you have now! Division III takes the viewer on a ride with the Pulham Blue Cocks, their new head coach Rick Vice (Andy Dick) and their second string quarterback Mitch (Marshall Cook). The football team has been ordered by the dean (Mo Collins) to have a winning record or else the football program will be abolished. The story is the usual underdog story. While it doesn’t quite match the storyline or intensity of other football stories such as The Replacements or Necessary Roughness, it does have the makings of an entertaining movie.
One of the positives to take away from this movie is its tone. Those lovable losers that eventually “find” themselves winners is a movie cliche that holds a special place in this reviewer’s heart. The characters are memorable such Adam Carolla and Will Sasso’s roles as two play-by-play commentators who by the end of the movie, will leave you laughing your butt off. Marshall Cook as stated before, plays a second string quarterback who get the reins of quarterback after an altercation between the coach and himself. Cook leads a fine group of young actors here.
Andy Dick curses throughout the movie, he tries way too hard to be funny, he has no acting range and he has no chemistry with the other actors. Sorry, I don’t buy Andy Dick being a football coach, let alone an actor. I think if the casting director would have chosen a squirrel over Andy Dick, this movie could have been a bit more popular. Casting Andy Dick was just a horrible decision.
If you love the underdog story, football or want to see terrible acting by Andy Dick, see this movie. No, this is not an Oscar nominated piece of art however it will make you laugh a couple of times and it is a feel good movie. The choice is yours.
