The Best of Bluegrass Underground Review

The Best of Bluegrass Underground not only manages to capture the vibrant sounds of great musical acts in the blues, bluegrass, jazz, gospel, folk, and other genres, but it showcases the incredible space of Tennessee’s Volcano Room. For those who’ve never heard of it, the concept is quite mind blowing and easily one of the coolest concert “halls” conceivable: a cave 333 feet below ground carved out by nature and capable of holding 700 people and the musicians on stage. The sound reverberates in a way wholly unique to caves, and it makes for an acoustical experience that gives the music played within a new sound. Even if you’re not a fan of bluegrass or jazz, the concert series recorded here makes for a dynamic audio experiences – the visuals not as much.

Concert DVDs and Blu-rays come and go with little to separate one from the next, but The Best of Bluegrass Underground will make you thankful if you’ve gone out and updated to a surround sound or improved sound setup. The range of artists to behold includes Mountain Heart, Ricky Skaggs, Josh Shilling, Will Hoge, The John Cowan Band, IIIrd Tyme Out, and many others. It’s easy just to close your eyes and let the fantastic music wash over you, and that’s really the best way to go, because there’s not much to see. It could easily be argued that this series works much better as an album than a DVD.
