'Captain America' and 'Avengers' to be 2-Parter in 2011

Plus, release dates for Thor and Iron Man 2.

In their First Quarter 2008 numbers report released this morning, Marvel revealed their plans for their superhero movies in the coming years. While they will not self-produce any movies in 2009, Iron Man 2 is already slated for April 30, 2010. Thor follows later, hitting theaters on June 4th.

2011, however, will be their biggest year, with a two-part Avengers movie in the summer, released two months apart. The first movie, out May 6th, is called The First Avenger: Captain America, focusing entirely on the Captain's origins. Then in July we'll have the much-promised The Avengers.

Sounds like a pretty good way to go about it, actually. From what it sounds like, the Captain America movie might be entirely a period piece. Perhaps we'll have a WWII Captain America story, where at the end he gets frozen in ice and revived in modern day at the beginning of the Avengers movie.

The question is, Jon Favreau was high on the list to direct The Avengers. He was lobbying hard for it, and said that it all depends on Iron Man's box office performance. Since Iron Man is a hit, it's even more likely that he'll get the job. Obviously the two Avengers movies will be directed by one guy, so does this mean he's doing Captain America too, then? It'll be smart. He nailed Iron Man, and his involvement might assure Robert Downey, Jr. to return as Iron Man. If Favreau's also doing Iron Man 2, though, he'll be an incredibly busy guy for the next few years.

The Marvel report also listed the following projects as being on the pipeline. Looks like they're doing the same thing DC is doing--adapting famous storylines into stand-alone DVD movies (Planet Hulk):
